My Big 2020 Goals
At the start of this year I set myself a personal goal to teach 1000 individual people how to play guitar in 2020.
Little did I know when I set my goal that we’ed experience Bushfires, Thunderstorms and now Covid-19, plus all the the fallout that is sure to follow.
Despite all these catastrophes, I am still as motivated as ever to work towards achieving my goal, and with the power of the internet this goal is closer than ever.
Two weeks ago I taught two sisters from Rural Queensland, who live over 1000 Kilometres away from me in their first lesson. Last week I taught another student in Norwich, England who has set the record at 16,766 kilometres away. So far this week I’ve ad an inquiry from Jamaica and another from the USA.
This then gave me an idea for my next big goal…
I am going to teach somebody from every single country in the world how to play guitar.
It might not all be during lockdown, It might not be all during this year, but one by one I will tick them off until I have achieved this goal.
And best of all, I bought one of those scratchy maps where you scratch off a country every time you visit it, only this time I’ll be scratching off the countries each time I teach a lesson.
This is of course all made possible by the power of the internet!

Who Is Michael Gumley
Michael Gumley is an internationally touring guitarist and the founder and head teacher of Melbourne Guitar Academy. He is currently on the artist roster for Ormsby Guitars, Line 6 FX, Yamaha Acoustic Guitars & Ernie Ball strings, and has had past endorsements with ESP Guitars & Blackstar Amplification.
Michael started his guitar playing journey when he got his first guitar and had his first lesson on his 15th birthday. From the very first note he knew he wanted to do guitar for the rest of his life and dedicated every waking minute to the pursuit of guitar skills and music theory knowledge.
Michael studied a Bachelor of Music but had to stretch his learning out over two additional years after suffering a nerve injury in his left hand. After a year of trying to fix things naturally Michael had surgery and a tough 6 month recovery period to help him overcome his injury but through the whole time he remained determined to overcome this hurdle and be the best guitarist in the world.
Although not playing for 13 months was difficult, it taught Michael a new appreciated for time as he would have to optimise his practice to match at first 5 minutes 3 times a day, then 10, then 15m, until he could manage an hour of guitar playing each day.
If you ever want to know why Michael is such a great teacher, it’s because he has had to learn guitar twice, and got a rare insight into the neurological side of learning as he had to rewire all his neural pathways for a second time.
Michael now teaches at Melbourne Guitar Academy, a guitar school he founded in 2015 and has recently expanded his endeavour to include online guitar lessons.
